Anthony Lawson Obi (born March 24, 1988) is an African-American rapper from Houston, Texas known by his stage name Fat Tony. Also known as Fat Tony Obidiyah Geofferey Jones, he has been performing for years in the Texas music scenes. A surefire crowd pleaser, whose unique blend of styles drives a new rap style into diverse audiences of music heads, Hip Hop heads, indie fans, and party craving patrons.
Fat Tony first gained prominence in Texas underground Hip Hop scene as a a founding member of Houston based Hip Hop group The Low Ends. As a teenager he was known organizing music events in Houston inviting regional & national bands such as The Ergs!, Joe Jitsu, The Rushmores, The Cocker Spaniels and other underground acts introducing them to Houston audiences for the first time. He intentionally organized events with a variety of styles to bring diversity to the forefront for the young audiences often getting their first taste of independent music. He was also a founding member and bassist in Houston based instrumental Rock ‘n’ Roll band Donatello.
His debut release entitled the Love Life EP (released by Same Struggle Ent. on March 4, 2008) has been spread nationwide due to his online promotion of the EP as a free download, and distributions of the EP-CD through shows.
His debut album entitled RABDARGAB is set be released in fall 2009 and features production from Shaka Girvan (better known as Dope Pope aka Tom Cruz) of Atlanta based rap group Supreeme.
Fat Tony is the winner of the 2008 Houston Press Music Awards’ Best Underground Hip Hop award. He is also certified as an URB (magazine) Next 1000 artist, a list of emerging new artists anticipated to breakthrough. Fat Tony was also recently nominated for the 2009 Houston Press Music Awards’ Best Underground Hip Hop award.
Fat Tony also works as a music journalist, currently freelance writing for his blog, Free Press Houston, and other publications.
