To describe the style of The Black and White Years is not easy; to classify them, an injustice. Their exhilarating, genre-blurring sound is like nothing you have heard before. Since their formation in 2005, their sound has evolved into an infectious electro-dance-rock that has brought them buzz-worthy status, radio airplay, and heavy recognition of their remarkable talent. Already, they’ve been labeled a band to watch in 2009 by Austin Monthly. Add in five 2009 Austin Music Awards (best producer, best new band, best song: “Power to Change,” best bass player, and best rock band) and you begin the grasp the big picture. That being, this band is burning down every stage they play with their unique, upbeat form of funk dance rock.
The Black and White Years (comprised of Scott Butler – Vocals/Keys, John Aldridge – Bass/Brass, Landon Thompson – Guitar, and Billy Potts – drums), are currently based out of Austin, Texas.

Abandoned by their maternal mother, The Blues, and forced to suck off the withering teat of R&B, the Happen-Ins were birthed unto the blistering heat of an East Austin garage with little hope or means of survival. Weathering the extreme circumstances through clever wordplay and hip shaking tomfoolery, the Happen-Ins bested fire with fire: They Played the Blues to spite their Mother, reaching far into the Devil’s empty gurgling stomach to steal back peices of the downtrodden’s souls. They refilled the sweet Bosom of R & B with their own heavy milk and rejoiced to watch those bountiful fruit once again sway back and forth rythmically for all to behold. They wooed lovers and made them dancers.

In a town of cover bands, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter stands out. With roots from the DFW music scene, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter brings a new element of creativity to the city of College Station. Members Ben Nankivell (guitar/keys), Collin Brewer (vocals/guitar/keys), and Travis Dalton (lead guitar) began writing a couple of acoustic songs in an apartment bedroom. After a few months of writing and playing together, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter grabbed rhythm section Jacob Massey (bass) and Brian Cox (drums) to add to their project along with the recent addition of Spencer Cogburn (synths/electric piano). A few shows and songs later, the band has made a name for itself in the Central Texas music scene. The band’s first effort, the “We’re Not Meant to be Alone” EP offers a look at the band’s mature nature along with plenty of hooks to keep you interested. Ambient guitars, melodic vocal lines, and driving rhythms are some of the things you’ll find in this band’s arsenal. The Heart is a Lonely Hunter continues to play and write music and is soon to release their sophomore EP sometime this winter.
